Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) is the total profit a customer generates over the entire relationship — not just today’s job. It matters because it reframes two big decisions: how much you can afford to spend to acquire a customer (CAC), and how much retention is worth. Owners who only see the first ticket massively undervalue their customers — and underinvest in keeping them.
LTV = Average job profit × Jobs per year × Years retained
(Use profit, not revenue — build it from real unit economics: profit per job.) Example: $200 average job profit × 2 jobs/year × 7 years = $2,800 in lifetime profit — and that’s before referrals.
The classic error: calculating LTV on a single transaction — treating a customer as worth one job. In reality, home-service customers are recurring (repairs, maintenance, replacements over years) and they refer others. Ignore repeat business and referrals and you’ll conclude you can barely afford to market — when in truth each customer is worth many times the first job. The second mistake is using revenue instead of profit, which overstates LTV. Get both right and the number transforms your strategy.
A happy customer who refers two others effectively multiplies their own LTV — you get their lifetime value plus a share of everyone they send. That’s why reputation and referrals are so valuable to LTV (referral program).
Asking a customer for a review deepens loyalty (they’ve publicly endorsed you) and that review recruits new customers — extending both retention and referral value at once. Tailwind automates the review ask after every job, quietly growing the LTV of every customer you serve — see how it works, and run the numbers with the review ROI calculator.
