Duplicate Google Business listings — two or more profiles for the same business — split your reviews, confuse Google, and can trigger a suspension. They creep in more often than you’d think: an old owner created one, Google auto-generated another, or a move left a stale listing behind. Here’s how to find and merge them.
Why duplicates hurt
Split authority: reviews and engagement scatter across profiles instead of concentrating on one strong listing.
Confused rankings: Google isn’t sure which listing to show, which can suppress both.
Suspension risk: duplicates violate Google’s guidelines and can flag your account.
Customer confusion: people find outdated info or leave reviews on the wrong profile.
How duplicates happen
Common causes: a previous employee or agency created a listing, Google auto-generated one from web data, you moved and a listing stayed at the old address, or a slight name/category variation spawned a second profile.
How to find them
Search your business name, address, and phone number in Google and Maps.
Search old addresses and phone numbers to surface stale listings.
Check for near-duplicates with slightly different names or categories.
How to merge or remove
Identify your primary (correct) listing — usually the verified one with the most reviews and accurate info.
Report the duplicate. In Maps, use “Suggest an edit” → “Close or remove” → “Duplicate,” or report it through your Business Profile.
Contact Google support if the duplicate has reviews you want preserved — Google can sometimes merge them onto the primary listing.
Never just create a new listing to fix it — that adds another duplicate.
Be patient; merges and removals take time.
Prevent recurrence
Keep one canonical listing, maintain consistent NAP so variations don’t spawn duplicates (NAP consistency), and when you move, update the existing listing rather than creating a new one. This overlaps with broader citation cleanup. Duplicates are also a frequent cause of suspensions — worth catching early.
