Google uses your primary category to decide which local searches you can rank for. If you’re a “Roofing contractor” but you chose “Contractor,” you’ll struggle to appear for “roofer near me.” The more precisely your category matches what people search, the better you rank for those terms.
Add secondary categories for other services you genuinely provide (a hair salon might add “Nail salon” and “Waxing hair removal service”). But don’t stuff the list — irrelevant categories dilute your relevance and can confuse Google about what you do. Only add what truly applies.
Nailing your category gets you into the running; your reviews decide whether you win the click. Both are top ranking factors — see local SEO ranking factors and do reviews affect SEO?. It’s all part of the broader GBP optimization checklist.
Once your categories are precise, keep the reviews flowing to climb for those searches. Tailwind automates that — see how it works, or find your exact category now with the category finder.
