Valuations vary by market, deal structure, and business specifics, and these ranges shift over time — treat them as directional. Get a real valuation from an M&A advisor before making decisions. This isn’t financial advice.
Most home-service businesses are valued as a multiple of earnings — usually EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) for larger businesses, or SDE (seller’s discretionary earnings) for smaller owner-operator shops. The formula is simple:
Value = Earnings (EBITDA/SDE) × Multiple
So two things drive your value: how much profit you make, and what multiple the market assigns you.
Bigger and more professionalized = higher multiple. This is also why private equity is rolling up the industry (PE roll-ups).
Both are worth working on well before you ever plan to sell (preparing to sell).
A strong, transferable reputation directly lifts your multiple — buyers pay for an established brand and a proven review engine that will keep generating customers after the sale. Every review you gather is building enterprise value, not just this month’s pipeline. Tailwind builds that asset automatically after each job — see how it works.
