new 5★ reviews to reach 4.5★ (you’d land around 4.50★).
Your average rating is simply the total number of stars divided by the number of reviews. To move that average up, this calculator solves for the number of new 5-star reviews needed: needed = reviews × (target − current) ÷ (5 − target). The result is rounded up, because you can’t leave half a review.
The math shows something most owners underestimate: the more reviews you already have, the harder your average is to move. A shop with 30 reviews can jump from 4.2 to 4.6 with a few good weeks; a shop with 800 reviews needs a sustained campaign for the same lift. That’s why asking for reviews consistently — not in bursts — is what protects a strong rating over time.
For a service business, the star rating is the first filter a customer applies. When someone searches “plumber near me” or “best HVAC company,” Google shows a map pack of three businesses, and the rating sits right next to the name. A 4.7 with 200 reviews beats a 4.9 with 12 — recency and volume matter as much as the number itself. Below roughly 4.0, click-through drops sharply and many people won’t call at all.
Rating also feeds ranking. It’s one of the signals Google uses to decide who appears in the local pack, so raising your average doesn’t just win the customers who see you — it helps more customers see you in the first place.
