Cost per lead (CPL) = total spend on a channel ÷ leads it produced. Simple — but the trap is stopping there. A cheap lead that never books is expensive; a pricier lead that closes at a high rate is cheap. Always pair CPL with book rate and close rate to get cost per booked job and, ultimately, cost per acquired customer.
These are directional — measure your own.
Paid channels have a floor — you’ll always pay roughly the going rate per lead. Owned channels don’t: as your reviews and reputation build, more customers find you directly and refer others, dragging your blended cost per lead down year after year. That’s the only channel where CPL keeps falling.
Strong reviews lift every channel at once — better LSA ranking, higher ad conversion, more referrals, more direct calls — which means more leads and lower cost across the board.
